White scale deposits form on the edges of water fountains and patio ponds when evaporation of hard water occurs. Hard water is water that contains calcium, and some city water supplies contain more calcium than others. White scale looks like crusty layers of hard white deposits that form a ring around the water line of your fountain or patio pond. The best way to detect hard water before it leads to white scale is to test your tap water's hardness level. If the hardness level is 150ppm or higher then your water is considered hard, and there is the potential for unsightly white scale deposits. These deposits can also be harmful to your pump and filter.
